CONTENTMENT COTTAGE

WELCOME! In the midst of each life's chaos exists a place of calm and sunshine. I call mine Contentment Cottage. It is the place where I write my stories and find the peace of God. I've posted my "Ice Pick" reviews and will continue to add some of what I call my "Ice Crystals": poems, articles, essays, fillers, and recipes.

"God will provide." It's become a cliche. You get begging letters in the mail and other genuine legitimate appeals for worthwhile charities, but feel you have nothing left to give. It's true that "charity begins at home," and 1 Peter 4:9 falls on shaking heads if not "deaf ears."

"Be hospitable to one another without grumbling." Yeah, right. The apostles felt the same way in Luke 9: 12-17 when Jesus told them to feed five thousand men (never mind the women and kids!) with five loaves, two fish, and no money. Jesus was relentless. "Give them something to eat. Have them sit down. Set the food before the people."

Well, that's nice, but they had Jesus there helping out!

Still, we can always do something. Even if you have very little. Even if you have "nothing." But we all have something, even if it is nothing more than our time, even if it is nothing less than our faith in and our love of God. God will provide. But we need to step out in faith.

while at a convention in Denver I discovered the wonderful 16th Street Mall. It's about 2 miles long, has trees and buses but no cars allowed down the length of the thing. About 20 Starbucks. A lot of great restaurants and shops. And a lot of homeless people on the street begging for money. I gave once, a moderate amount. I was thanked heartily. Then the next guy who asked, the next day and on another block, got my answer of, "I already gave." I got the glare of the century, as if I was lying. My pockets are not deep. Wish I could help everyone, but I can't.

I know how you feel about giving of yourself to someone in great need. There are times you feel thin as air, you're strung so thin. Please remember you have friends who love you. Call anytime and reverse the charges--you know I won't mind....
